Your Last Physical Therapy Appointment Is a Strength Starting Line
You finish your last appointment. Your therapist tells you that you are good to go. You shake hands. You walk out to your car.
And then there is nothing on the calendar.
That is the part nobody prepares you for. For eight or ten or twelve weeks you had a plan, a person, and a standing appointment. Now you have a folder of exercises and your own judgment.
Most of the people I meet were standing in that parking lot a year ago. They felt good at discharge. They did the home exercises for a few weeks. Work got busy. The sheet went in a drawer. And somewhere around month four, the ache came back.
They are not unusual. Researchers followed 250 people with low back pain for a full year, checking in every month. Sixty-nine percent had it return within twelve months. Four in ten had a return bad enough to change what they could do during the day.
That number is not a knock on physical therapy. PT did its job. Getting you out of pain and building the capacity that keeps you out of pain are two different projects. The first one ends at discharge. The second one never had a start date.
What discharge means
Discharged means safe. It does not mean strong.
Your clinician cleared you to move. They did not have twelve more weeks to load that tissue, rebuild what you lost while you were hurt, and teach your body to handle a full grocery run, a weekend of yard work, or picking up a grandkid off the floor. That was never the scope.
Here is what I hear in the gym, close to word for word:
- “I don’t want to undo what I just paid for.”
- “I’m not sure what I’m allowed to do anymore.”
- “I went back to a gym and everything in there felt like too much.”
That is the gap. You are too healed for a clinic and not ready for a room full of people who have been lifting for ten years. So you wait. Waiting is the part that costs you.
What we built for that gap
BridgeFit is our post-rehab program. It picks up where your clinician left off and trains you inside the restrictions they set. If your PT says hold a movement pattern, we hold it. We coach adults who are coming off injury every day, and we have spent years working alongside the PTs, chiros, and orthopedic groups in this area.
It starts with a Starting Point Assessment. Forty-five minutes, no workout, no pitch. We screen how you move and you leave with a written Starting Point Report, whether you ever train with us or not.
“I’ve had chronic back pain my whole life from a spinal deformity, so working out was intimidating. After two months, I realized how much progress I made when I was helping with an event at my kids’ school that required me to squat then stand, several times, over a 3 hour period. I did it with no pain and was not out of breath.”
